Santander, in northeastern Colombia, is divided into two large geographical regions. On the western side is the Magdalena River Valley, a mostly flat area with an average temperature of 29 degrees Celsius. The eastern side is home to the mountainous region of the Eastern Cordillera (mountain range) where the spectacular Chicamocha Canyon is located. The economy is based on agriculture, but it is quickly being surpassed by industries like cement production, textiles, processed food and metallurgy. The Magdalena River is used to transport most of the region's products around the country. Santander coffee growers are characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity that is mainly determined by differences in land size. This particular lot is from 41 producers (see attached factsheet for names) with an average of 12 hectares of coffee-growing land each. (The posted score is accurate as of a re-cupping in October 2017.)
