Mario Ajualip purchased his farm, Chuapec (pronounced choo-a-peck) 15 years ago, after working in the United States and saving money. He purchased the farm from family members, Pascual and Ana Teletor, who also sold microlots to Genuine Origin this season. Mario decided to plant coffee on the property because his neighbors were planting coffee and seeing very positive results. He believes that for his region, coffee is the best crop he can plant, with the best financial results. He has a small convenience store in town, but coffee is his main source of income. Chuapec means great stone, and there are many on the property; some are as large as 16 feet tall! A famous Mayan ruin in Guatemala is called Chuapec Kekacajol Nima Abaj, or, the Great Stone in Front of the Cave of the Children of Night.
