Sul de Minas is one of the most traditional and diverse growing regions in Brazil. Coffee was introduced in this region around 1850 and since then it has become one of the most important economic assets to the region. Located on southern part of Minas Gerais, it’s the largest producing region in Brazil counting with more than 600.000ha planted with coffee where thousands of coffee growers - predominantely small - work hard to produce coffee in a very challenging environment where the mechanization is limited.
The mountainous topography with steep slopes and large valleys, rich soils and soft climate produce an exclusive terroir which favors the production of high end arabicas. Besides that, the region has an exuberant natural scene with coffee planted in charming mountains. The altitude varies from 750 to 1350 masl and the overall climate pattern is mild – summer is hot and wet and winter dry and warm during the days - average temperature is about 20ºC (though region’s more suceptible to frosts) - and rain’s scheme is regular with wet events during the harvesting period. The combination of mild weather, privileged natural beauties, multiple processing methods and colonial farms make Sul de Minas an unique origin that encharts demanding buyers around the world.
About the Farm
Sitio do Turvo is located in a very special micro region within Sul de Minas called Serra da Mantiqueira (Serra means mountain and Mantiqueira is an Indigenous' word from Tupi’s tribe meaning, drop of rain. It is known by natives as the mountain that cries due to multiple springs that streams from there forming waterfalls. In this chain of mountains altitudes range between 1000 to 3000 masl across more than 500km of extension. It delimited the borders of three estates: Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro where it starts right in front of the Atlantic ocean. This region is one of the famous for high quality Brazil coffee. Its coffees are always ranked amid the top competitions and it has become a sensation among specialty buyers.
About the Producer
Eriques Rafael da Silva is a small grower and fourth generation producer. He took over the small farm after his father retired and since then has worked hard to thrive. He has been doing a great job reinvigorating areas his father abandoned. Just 23 years old, Enriques does everything on the farm with his bare hands; from planting to post-harvesting. Open minded and always interested in learning and understanding modern agricultural practices, Eriques represents a new generation of young coffee growers. He believes that coffee can provide more than just a good living; he believes it can provide a higher purpose to him and his family.
He quoted that what made this natural coffee great was a combination of its unique terroir where coffee plots are located, altitude, favorable weather and flowering that led to an uniform maturation, the right variety (believes yellow skin varieties perform better on cup), right harvesting time - only ripe cherries are manually picked - and proper post harvest care which includes slower drying process under the sun.
