About the Coffee
Matas de Minas occupies over 275,000 hectares of coffee-producing land in southeastern Minas Gerais, the largest coffee-growing state in Brazil. Plantations in the Matas de Minas region were strong drivers of coffee’s surge as a critical export crop in the country back in the mid-19th century. As one of the oldest coffee-growing regions in Brazil, Matas de Minas holds a long history of integrating people with the Atlantic Forest ecosystem that blankets the area. Here, coffee has created over 75,000 direct and 156,000 indirect jobs across 64 municipalities.
Of the 36,000 producers, over 80% are smallholders who handpick cherries along the steep mountainside slopes of their farms. Much of the coffee grown here is of the highly productive Mundo Novo variety, a cross between Bourbon and Typica, and the Catuai variety, which is a cross between Mundo Novo and the compact Caturra plant.
The climate in Matas de Minas is a humid one, encouraging the growth of coffee and forest vegetation at high altitudes. In the past, the humidity posed a challenge to coffee harvesting and processing, but technology has paved the way for improvements in agricultural practices. That’s why this Brazil Matas de Minas Natural scores so well, with intense floral and citrus aromas followed by a diverse flavor profile that brings out the dried fruit sugar sweetness and chocolate notes.
There’s a 1-in-3 chance the coffee in your cup is from Brazil. It’s a huge country with a staggering coffee export — over 33% percent of the world’s coffee supply comes out of Brazil — and that doesn’t include the coffee they keep to drink themselves. Brazil has been at the top of the coffee export chain since the early 1800s when coffee farming overtook sugarcane as a cash crop. Read the Brazil Green Coffee Origin Report
