Coffee was introduced to Sulawesi, one of Indonesia’s main islands, by the Dutch East India Company in the 1700s. The focal point of Sulawesi coffee production can be found in Tana Toraja where smallholder farmers grow coffee on mountainous slopes reaching elevations of up to 1800 masl. Much of the coffee produced in Sulawesi is grown in the wild and many of the old Typica-derived varietals can still be found in the region. Coffee is traditionally wet-hulled (locally known as, Giling Basah), which gives Sulawesi green coffee beans their rich, intense flavors, low to medium acidity and big body.
