Kenya Machure Estate AA 2022
About the Coffee
The Machure Coffee Estate is located in Thika, a major commerce hub in Kiambu County that borders Nairobi City. The family-owned estate sits at 1,500masl on the central highlands characterized by hills, plateaus, and elevations that reach 1800masl. In addition to coffee production, the Hinga family also cultivates horticulture and maize alongside sheep and goat-rearing.
The subtropical highland climate in Thika is sunny most of the year, with two rainy seasons in spring and fall that see around 900-1000mm of rain per annum. Coffee thrives in the rich red volcanic soil, and the Machure estate favors the SL34, SL28, K7, and Ruiru 11 varieties, balancing exceptional cup quality with high-yielding, disease-resistant plants.
Early in the morning, producers handpick ripe cherries into debes (buckets) and carry them to the wet mill. After sorting, the cherries are pulped and left to ferment for 16 hours before being washed and graded. The beans are dried on raised beds for 10 - 14 days under careful supervision against rain or harsh sunlight and are regularly checked for moisture levels.
