Kenya Mchana Coffee Estate AA 2022
About the Coffee
The Mchana Coffee Estate’s 900 hectares of land are organized into areas dedicated to different parts of coffee production. Over half of the land is the bearing area, while around 380 hectares are for the mulch crop, 17 hectares form the forests, 23 hectares include the dams and water bodies, and 30 hectares are reserved for infrastructure. The estate employs over 170 permanent workers and up to 1200 casual workers per day, depending on the season.
The estate stretches across Ruiru, Kiambu County, at 1,700-1,750masl. Rolling plains of deep red volcanic soil that’s considerably loamy and sandy characterize the region’s undulating landscape. The rainy seasons last from March to May and October to December and coffee is set on a yearly production calendar.
Nearly 75% of the coffee grown on the estate is SL28. Ruiru 11 makes up 23%, and a minor percentage is of the K7 and Batian varieties. Ripe cherries are collected during the main harvest from October to December. Hygiene and economical water consumption are priorities for the Mchana Estate, and coffee processing water is re-circulated to reduce waste. Alternative fuel and electricity methods are employed in the drying stage when the weather is not conducive to sun drying.
