About the Coffee
The Copán Department of Honduras is bursting with vibrant wildlife, rich culture, ancient Mayan history, and outstanding coffee. In the early 2000s, the country ramped up investment into coffee production infrastructure, and since 2011, Honduras has held the title of the top-producing country in Central America. Additionally, the average age of a producer here is younger than in most regions. Thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of these innovators, stark improvements have risen in Honduras’ reputation for quality coffee.

Cafes Finos de Corquin (CAFICO) is one such organization to benefit from the leadership of future-minded agronomists. The Romero brothers are from a 4th generation farming family. Together, they steer the helm of CAFICO, sharing the responsibilities of production, general management, and marketing to bring coffee from Copán to the global market. As stewards of their land and the land in surrounding communities, they forge links between key parts of the coffee supply chain to strengthen both stability and success for everyone involved.

CAFICO understands the significance of traceability and how it affects quality. Everyone is connected, and their team includes quality control management and farm certification technicians to offer the best support and feedback to their producing partners. Over 350 farmers contributed coffee to this Copán CAFICO Organic 2021 lot at altitudes from 1100-1900masl. All of these farmers have access to CAFICO’s state-of-the-art washing facilities that are calibrated to produce parchment at international quality standards. CAFICO’s investment into natural, mechanical, and solar dryers also upholds quality at every stage of coffee processing.

But CAFICO’s contribution to the community doesn’t just stop with coffee. They are also heavily involved in social responsibility projects in Honduras, providing support to churches, mother-and-child healthcare centers, libraries, and schools to build facilities and donate much-needed medical supplies and water filters. Everything CAFICO does is to maximize the responsible use of available resources to uplift the quality of life for farmers and their families.

Origin Report
Honduras is a small Central American country with its share of problems. The World Bank estimates that in rural areas 20% of Hondurans earn less than $1.90 per day. Country-wide, roads are sub-optimal; many coffee farms in Honduras are accessible only via dirt roads that snake up along mountainsides. Despite these factors, entrepreneurial producers are working toward higher quality, experimenting with new processing techniques and growing high-profile varietals. The objective: kick down the door of the specialty coffee market, build a reputation as a specialty coffee origin and earn the money that comes with it.
