El Salvador: Small Farms, Big Potential

Although El Salvador is now ranked as the 21st largest coffee producer, the country continues to deliver standout green coffees beans. Salvadoran coffee is known for its balance, clarity, and elegance.

Much of El Salvador’s specialty coffee comes from smallholder farms—about 80% of producers work on plots under 3.5 hectares. Production for the 2024/25 harvest was ~561,000 60k bags, with a modest increase forecasted for 2025/26. However, challenges like labor shortages, climate vulnerability, and limited access to farm investment continue to affect yields—currently averaging just 4.75 bags per hectare.

Still, the legacy of El Salvador’s coffee excellence is alive in each well-sorted lot. From the volcanic peaks of Santa Ana to the cooler elevations of Chalatenango, dedicated growers continue to deliver coffees that reward careful roasting and thoughtful sourcing.
