Cerro El Centro & Brumas del Zurquí

The El Centro farm, part of Brumas del Zurquí and managed by Juan Ramón Alvarado Rodríguez, sits at 1,600 masl in Costa Rica’s Central Valley. The farm’s fertile volcanic soil, cool climate, and dedication to sustainable practices provide the foundation for high-quality specialty micro-lots. With over a century of coffee tradition from the Gómez Chávez family and the Alvarado lineage, Brumas del Zurquí represents four generations committed to excellence, sustainability, and innovation in Costa Rican coffee.

Kenia Variety

This micro-lot features the Kenia variety, a cultivar named for its genetic lineage traced back to selections developed in Kenya. Known for its lively acidity, aromatic complexity, and fruit-forward character, Kenia thrives in the Central Valley’s volcanic soils. In this natural process lot, the variety expresses itself with vibrant fruit tones, layered sweetness, and a unique complexity that distinguishes it as one of El Centro’s standout offerings.

Washed Processing

In the washed process, ripe cherries are depulped, fermented, and carefully washed to remove the mucilage before being sun-dried. At El Centro, this method produces a cup that highlights the crisp acidity, floral tones, and sparkling fruit character of the Kenia variety. The result is a vibrant, articulate coffee that reflects both the variety and the Central Valley terroir.

Costa Rican Coffee History

Costa Rica has developed a reputation both for high quality coffee and for innovation – a winning combination. These factors along with Costa Rica’s quality socio-economic infrastructure programs such as universal healthcare, high education levels, sophisticated agronomy and research, and well-regulated agricultural sustainability programs certainly contribute to the high cost of its coffee. Additionally, Costa Rican producers receive nearly 80% of the FOB value of the coffee, guaranteed. Read more in our Costa Rica Green Coffee Origin Report.
