Guatemala Green Coffee Beans
Chiquimula is a lesser-known coffee-growing region in Guatemala’s Totonicapán department. The community here takes pride in its rich agricultural history, growing coffee among steep mountains, old forests, picturesque valleys, and towering volcanoes.
Guatemala green coffee beans are classic, much-loved coffees, and for a good reason. Clean, well-bodied cup profiles with mild to medium acidity are characteristic of Guatemala’s high-grown unroasted coffees.
Over 125,000 Guatemalan coffee producers work on small farms, and many are dedicated to preserving specific varieties that have become synonymous with high-quality Guatemalan coffee. These include Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Pache, Typica, and more recently introduced varieties like Geisha, Pacamara, Maragogype, and Maracaturra.
Smallholders like Mario Jordan are continuously working on single-varietal lots and improving production quality year after year. As the market for specialty coffee from Guatemala grows, producers like Mario can break away from the pack to diversify their offerings.
Pacamara Green Coffee Varietal
The Pacamara coffee varietal is a cross between Maragogype and Pacas, resulting in compact-sized trees with huge green coffee beans. Growing Pacamara coffee is uncommon due to the varietal’s low yield and susceptibility to disease. Guatemalan Pacamara coffee is prized for its high cup quality, creamy body, delicate floral notes, and lively tropical flavors.
