Rwanda Kirehe Inzovu Washed SCR 15+

Named after the Kinyarwanda word for elephant, Inzovu is a coffee that reflects the strength, resilience, and natural beauty of eastern Rwanda. Grown by smallholder farmers in Kirehe District, this lot comes from a region known for its rolling hills, fertile soils, and favorable growing conditions. Coffee trees thrive in the warm days and cool nights of Rwanda’s countryside, producing cherries that mature slowly and develop exceptional sweetness and complexity.

This coffee was produced by Rwanda Trading Company (RTC), an organization that has played a significant role in elevating the profile of Rwandan coffee since its founding in 2009. RTC works directly with tens of thousands of smallholder farmers across the country, investing in agronomy training, coffee seedlings, quality improvement, and long-term sustainability initiatives. By strengthening the connection between farming communities and specialty coffee markets, RTC helps farmers capture greater value from the remarkable coffees they produce.

Kirehe Inzovu showcases the dedication of Rwanda's coffee-growing families and the meticulous care they bring to each harvest. Screen size 15+ selections ensure a consistent bean size and roasting experience, while careful processing preserves the clarity and balance that characterize Rwanda's finest washed coffees. The result is a clean, approachable cup with vibrant sweetness, lively acidity, and a refined structure that highlights the terroir of eastern Rwanda.

Washed Processing

harvest, ripe cherries were carefully sorted before being pulped to remove the outer fruit. The coffee was then fermented to break down the remaining mucilage, thoroughly washed with clean water, and dried slowly on raised beds under the African sun.

This washed process emphasizes clarity, sweetness, and origin character. By removing the fruit before drying, the coffee develops a clean cup profile that allows the nuances of the terroir of the growing region to shine through.

Coffee in Rwanda

Coffee was introduced to Rwanda in the early twentieth century and has since become one of the country's most important agricultural exports. While coffee was historically grown as a commodity crop, Rwanda's specialty coffee sector started to gain international recognition in the early 2000s as investments in washing stations, quality control, and producer training transformed the industry.

Today, Rwanda is celebrated for producing some of Africa's most distinctive washed coffees. The country's high elevations, volcanic soils, and ideal equatorial climate create exceptional growing conditions, while a strong focus on quality and traceability has earned Rwandan coffees a respected place among specialty roasters worldwide.
