Sumatra Gajah Estate G1 TP Natural
Sumatra Gajah Estate G1 TP Natural
From the rugged highlands of Central Aceh, nestled at the peak of Mount Geureudong, comes a rare gem in Indonesian coffee: Gajah Estate G1 TP Natural. This exceptional lot is grown at elevations of 1,266 to 1,600 meters above sea level, where nutrient-rich volcanic soils and a dynamic ecosystem - fed by two rivers - create ideal conditions for producing high-quality, specialty-grade coffee.
The Elephant Legacy
“Gajah” means elephant in Indonesian, and the estate’s name pays homage to the wild elephants that roam the forests of Aceh. Unlike the elusive Sumatran tiger, elephants are fearless and often pass directly through the plantation, leaving a powerful impression on the local community. Their presence is both majestic and formidable - an unstoppable force of nature. The coffee grown here, with its large, elongated cherries and bluish-green hue, seems to inherit the strength and grandeur of these mighty creatures.
Farming & Varietals
Gajah Estate is the first and largest private coffee estate in the region, managed sustainably and planted according to topography and varietal separation. The estate cultivates Ayunda (a Tim Tim × Ateng hybrid) and Ateng Super, both well-suited to the mountainous terrain and known for producing dense, flavorful beans.
Processing: Natural Method
This lot is naturally processed, a rarity in Sumatra where wet-hulling is the norm. After selective harvesting, ripe cherries are dried whole under the sun, allowing the fruit’s sugars to infuse the bean. This method enhances the coffee’s juicy, fruity character, while maintaining a clean cup - a standout trait compared to typical Sumatran profiles.
Grading: Grade 1 Triple Picked
This coffee is Grade 1 TP, meaning it has been Triple Picked - a rigorous sorting process that removes defects and ensures uniformity. In Indonesia, Grade 1 represents the highest quality tier, suitable for specialty export.
Gayo & Aceh Coffee Heritage
The Gayo Highlands of Aceh are renowned for producing some of Indonesia’s finest Arabica coffees. Coffees from this region are known for their earthy, bold profiles. Gajah Estate breaks from convention with its natural process, offering a fruit-forward alternative that still honors the region’s deep coffee legacy.
Indonesian Coffee Beans
The key Indonesian green coffee regions include Aceh, North Sumatra, South Sulawesi, West Java, Bali, and Flores. Java, in particular, is renowned for its pivotal role in spreading coffee production across the Indonesian archipelago. While regions like Sulawesi and Sumatra boast a long history of coffee cultivation, Bali represents a relatively newer coffee-growing area, primarily known for its small-batch, limited-scale coffee production.
