Uganda Luwero Natural Robusta Scr 18 2026
Luwero Natural Robusta SC18 Clean – Uganda
Sourced from smallholder farmers across Uganda’s central Luwero region, this Screen 18 Clean Robusta represents a refined, high grade expression of Uganda’s most historic and economically important coffee species. Clean, dense, and carefully milled, it celebrates both the region’s agricultural heritage and Kyagalanyi Coffee’s quality focused approach to Robusta production.
Robusta Coffee from Uganda
Arabica vs Robusta coffee is a conversation that’s hot – especially with the uptick in specialty Robusta coffees that’s becoming more widely available from various coffee origins.
Around 80% of the coffee grown in Uganda is Coffea canephora, or Robusta coffee. The plant naturally contains more caffeine than Arabica coffee, making it more resistant to pests and diseases. The main advantage of growing Robusta over Arabica coffee is that Robusta thrives at lower altitudes and higher temperatures, with less effort required for cultivation.
With Robusta coffee market prices on the rise many origins are applying best practices in harvesting and processing to Robusta coffee. Thus, Robusta quality and traceability are on the rise. Today, specialty coffee roasters are incorporating Robusta into blends and more producers grow Robusta on their farms as a hedge against climate change.
Processing: Naturally Dried, Selectively Milled
This lot is a natural process coffee, meaning whole cherries were dried with their fruit layers intact before hulling. Once purchased, Kyagalanyi Coffee (Genuine Origin’s sister co.) selectively milled the coffee and separated beans to achieve a Screen 18 classification.
The result is a clean, stable, high density Robusta well suited for both espresso blends and specialty Robusta forward applications.
Varieties: KR1–KR10 & Clonal A–H
Farmers in the Luwero region grow a range of Robusta varieties (KR1–KR10) and clonal selections (A–H)—the result of decades of Ugandan agricultural research focused on improving: Productivity and drought tolerance; cup uniformity; and adaptation to central Uganda’s rainfall and soil conditions.
While Robusta is often viewed through a commodity lens, these improved clonal lines have helped elevate Uganda’s reputation for specialty grade Robusta with cleaner profiles and more consistency than traditional landrace varieties.
Luwero and the Central Uganda Coffee Belt
Luwero sits within Uganda’s central coffee heartland, a region characterized by rich soils, warm temperatures, and roughly 1,300 mm of annual rainfall each year. Farmers cultivate coffee at 1,100–1,200 masl, where Robusta thrives.
Ugandan Green Coffee
While Ethiopia is Africa's top coffee producer, Uganda is hot on its heels. Uganda stands as the continent's leading producer of Robusta and its Arabica sector has expanded rapidly, particularly in high-altitude regions like Mt. Elgon and the Rwenzori Mountains. Investments in farmer training, processing infrastructure, and quality improvement have elevated Uganda’s reputation as one of East Africa’s most exciting Arabica origins.
