Uganda Mt Elgon Kapchorwa A Washed 2026
Mt. Elgon Fully Washed | Kapchorwa, Uganda
High on the slopes of Uganda’s famed Mt. Elgon, the Kapchorwa region produces some of the country’s most delicately structured Arabica coffees. This fully washed lot, processed at Kyagalanyi Coffee’s Kapchorwa Washing Station, showcases a clean, sweet, and fruity profile shaped by precise fermentation and careful drying.
Kapchorwa on Mt. Elgon
Mt. Elgon rises along Uganda’s eastern border, its high elevations and volcanic soils creating ideal conditions for slow ripening Arabica. Kapchorwa sits at around 1,800 masl, where cool temperatures and roughly 1,500 mm of annual rainfall help develop dense beans and bright, refined acidity.
The washing station receives cherry from 2,000 farmers, each hand selecting ripe coffee during the harvest season from August to January. These smallholders cultivate on the steep hillsides that ring the mountain, contributing to one of Uganda’s most established Arabica communities.
Washed Processing at the Kapchorwa Mill
At the Kapchorwa Mill, freshly picked coffee cherries are pulped upon arrival to remove the skin. Beans are fermented, developing clarity and highlighting the coffee’s natural sweetness. Coffees are then dried to an ideal moisture level. This careful sequence produces a cup noted for its sweet, fruit-forward character, and silky, tea like finish, a hallmark of high altitude Mt. Elgon washed coffees.
Several years ago, Uganda coffee was mainly limited to drugars (Dried Uganda Arabica) grade beans that were inconsistent and often of poor quality. As a result, farmers struggled to earn a living from their crops. Now, new receiving stations and mills are coming online and Uganda is experiencing a coffee renaissance. The new infrastructure is enabling ripe red coffee cherries to be delivered and processed using state-of-the-art equipment. The quality of Uganda coffee is increasing and the price that farmers get for their crops is going up, as well.
Washed processing has become widely popular. The cup profile of washed coffees tends to reflect the terroir of the coffee. The processing method allows the growing conditions, the region and the true character of the coffee to shine through.
SL14 and SL28 Varieties
The “SL” in SL14 and SL28 refers to Scott Laboratories, a Kenyan agricultural research center known for identifying and developing high-performing coffee varieties. SL28 was selected for its exceptional cup quality and drought resilience. SL14 was identified for its adaptability and consistently high-quality cup potential across East Africa’s varied environments.
Ugandan Green Coffee
While Ethiopia is Africa's top coffee producer, Uganda is hot on its heels. Uganda stands as the continent's leading producer of Robusta and its Arabica sector has expanded rapidly, particularly in high-altitude regions like Mt. Elgon and the Rwenzori Mountains. Investments in farmer training, processing infrastructure, and quality improvement have elevated Uganda’s reputation as one of East Africa’s most exciting Arabica origins.
